From the Desk of the National President: June 2024 Updates

Brothers –

As we move from May into June, we welcome the warmth and energy of early summer—a season of joy, respite, and celebration. This new month offers us a chance to rest, reflect on our successes, and prepare for the future. June marks our National Month of Celebration, an opportunity to come together and recognize the hard work and achievements of the past year. It’s a time to celebrate our accomplishments, set new goals, and look forward to the exciting opportunities ahead. As we kick off summer, let’s harness the positivity of the season to fuel our enthusiasm for the second half of this biennium and beyond.

In the spirit of celebration, I invite us all to reflect on the values that unite us and the vibrant diversity that strengthens our Brotherhood. As we honor the resilience and beauty of the LGBTQ+ community during Pride Month and participate in our chapter or individual celebrations, let us do so with a sense of purpose and unity. Our shared values and mutual support are the foundation of our community, and June is the perfect time to reaffirm these bonds and give back.

With that said, I’m excited to share a few updates with you. Please take some time to carefully review the rest of this newsletter. As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions. I look forward to sharing an exceptional June with you!

Update #1: National Month of Celebration

June marks our National Month of Celebration, an essential part of this biennium’s vision and plan. This month, we reflect on the past academic year and celebrate our progress and achievements as individuals, chapters, districts, and as a Fraternity. It’s a time to recognize how far we’ve come on #TheKappaKappaPsiJourney and to set new goals for the second half of the biennium.

As we look ahead, what are your personal, professional, academic, and fraternal aspirations? What new skills or experiences do you want to explore? How can you contribute to Kappa Kappa Psi’s growth and success, and your own?

Personally, I aim to spend more time with friends and family, visit my family in Asia before the end of 2024, and commit to healthier lifestyle choices. Professionally, I plan to pursue further education and professional development opportunities while strengthening relationships with colleagues. Fraternally, I will focus on supporting our Actives and Alumni, ensuring purposeful programming, and preparing our leadership for upcoming conventions and transitions. Take a moment to think about your ambitions and the steps you can take to reach them as you continue own your own growth journey.

Update #2: National Vice President for Student Affairs

In the spirit of celebration, it is with great enthusiasm that the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi announces the appointment of Arupa Gopal-Campbell as our next National Vice President for Student Affairs!

Arupa is a Life Member of the Kappa Tau Chapter at the University of South Florida, where she was initiated in the Spring of 2004. During her time as an active member, she served as Chapter President and Vice President of Membership, and represented her chapter at District and National conventions. Arupa holds dual majors in Music and Management from USF and a Master of Arts in Performing Arts Administration from New York University. She has extensive experience in fraternity leadership, including serving as Southeast District Governor from 2018 to 2024 and as the Chapter Sponsor for Kappa Tau.

We announced this search in February 2024 and invited applications until the end of April. We are grateful for the deep and diverse pool of candidates who showed the courage to put their names forward. Our focus was on finding the best fit for our team, someone with the skills and experience to hit the ground running.  Arupa stood out due to her extensive experience as a chapter sponsor and Southeast District Governor. Additionally, her background in non-profit and arts management will be invaluable as we navigate changes at our National Headquarters.

Please join us for the installation call, which will be live-streamed on Wednesday, June 5th at 5:30pm CT.

As we celebrate this month, I want to focus on our shared value of Love. Love is the foundation that strengthens our Brotherhood and fuels our dedication to Kappa Kappa Psi. This month, I invite you to reflect on what Love means to you. How do you like to receive love from others? How do you show love to those around you? Think about your love for music, leadership, service, brotherhood, and Kappa Kappa Psi.

Consider how Love can make each of us, and our Fraternity, stronger. How can you incorporate Love into your day-to-day life? How can you show more Love to your Brothers? How can you contribute to our Fraternity with Love?

For me, it’s my love for Kappa Kappa Psi, my journey as a leader and Brother, and each of you that powers my drive to continue my service, even through difficult and dark times. Let’s harness the power of Love to inspire our actions and uplift our Brotherhood. Together, we can pave a brighter path on The Kappa Kappa Psi Journey by leading with Love in everything we do.

With Love and Appreciation,

From the Desk of the National President: May 2024 Updates

Brothers –

As April gives way to May, we find ourselves at a juncture of renewal and promise, an ideal moment to cultivate personal and communal growth. The very name of May derives from the Latin word maius, associated with growth and springtime. True to its definition, May invites us to foster new beginnings and to deepen our appreciation for the vibrant beauty within our fraternity and communities. This month, we observe and honor several significant cultural and social milestones: Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Jewish American Heritage Month, Mental Health Awareness Month, showing appreciation on Mother’s Day, and paying tribute to our fallen heroes on Memorial Day.

As the cadence of the academic year slows down, we have a valuable opportunity to reflect on our recent achievements and reassess for the future. This period of reflection is not just a pause but a vital preparation for the rewards of tomorrow as we approach our Month of Celebration in June. Let’s use this time to rejuvenate our spirits, strengthen our bonds, and prepare ourselves for the joyful celebrations that lie ahead. With that said, please take the time to review the updates and highlights for this month.

Together, let’s ensure this May is truly memorable!

APRIL UPDATES

Update #1: Kicking Off our Month of Brotherhood

This April, we’re diving deep into what Brotherhood means in Kappa Kappa Psi. Brotherhood isn’t just a word; it’s a concept that evolves as we grow and learn together. The essence of Brotherhood transcends mere words as it embodies a profound connection built on shared values, experiences, and aspirations. This Month of Brotherhood presents an opportunity for each member to reflect and redefine what Brotherhood means within the context of our fraternity. Here are some guiding questions to kickstart your reflections:

  1. What is the definition of Brotherhood? Is it simple or difficult to develop a concrete definition? Why?
  2. Discuss how your chapter demonstrates Brotherhood. Can your chapter improve? How?
  3. How does the Fifth purpose connect to the core value of Brotherhood?
  4. What or how do you promote belonging in your chapter?

Update #2: Announcing our Next Chapter Field Representatives

From the Desk of the National President: March 2024 Updates

Brothers –

As we embark on the month of March, we stand at the threshold of a significant and inspiring time: Women’s History Month. This is a moment for us to reflect on and celebrate the invaluable contributions of women to our Fraternity, our lives, and the broader tapestry of history.

Throughout The Kappa Kappa Psi Journey, women have played a pivotal role, leaving an indelible mark on every facet of our organization. Reflecting on our history and the profound impact of numerous female-identifying Brothers on our fraternity, such as Wava Banes, Deb Eakins, Marie Burleigh, Dr. Malinda Matney, Dr. Christine Beason, Jessica Lee, the Sisters of the Sigma Chapter of TBS, and countless others, I am inspired to carry forward their fraternal legacy by empowering our members to become better leaders and strengthening our service to college and university bands. This month holds special significance as we commemorate the founding of Tau Beta Sigma on March 26th, 1946. This milestone underscores the deep bond and collaborative spirit that exists between our organizations. Together, we stand united in our mission to serve collegiate bands and promote a deeper appreciation of music.

In honor of Women’s History Month, I encourage each and every one of you to fully engage with our updates and programming this month. Through active participation and thoughtful consideration of the opportunities presented to us, we have the opportunity to amplify our collective impact as leaders and fortify the bonds of brotherhood and service. Together, let us embrace the rich tapestry of Women’s History Month and draw strength from the extraordinary legacy of women in Kappa Kappa Psi who have shaped our past, illuminate our present, and inspire our future.

Please take a moment to carefully review the important updates and highlights in this newsletter. These insights offer a window into the progress we’ve made and continue to make for our fraternity. Your active participation and thoughtful consideration of these updates are vital as we navigate the path forward together. Let’s seize this opportunity to celebrate our accomplishments, address challenges, and chart a course toward an even brighter future for Kappa Kappa Psi.

Our Month of Leadership in February was a resounding success with insightful virtual sessions. We kicked off with a compelling panel discussion featuring members of the Founders’ Circle Task Force: Dr. Kirk Randazzo, Jessica Lee, Molly Kuchan, Dr. Nicholas Rorrer, and Jason Ortiz. Following this, Jessica Lee led a thought-provoking discussion with Active and Alumni members on the value of leadership development, and how we can cultivate these moments in our lives. For those who missed or want a revisit, session recordings are available below.

Looking ahead, we’re committed to integrating these learnings into our National Membership Education Program, The Road to Wisdom, and expanding leadership-based programming throughout the year. Your participation in these initiatives strengthens our fraternity, guiding us toward a future defined by excellence. Don’t forget to catch these speakers at our upcoming district conventions, where they’ll present workshops and keynotes on crucial leadership topics!

Highlight #2: TMEA, MMEA, & The Super Bowl

We’re thrilled to share updates from our recent attendance at the 2024 Texas Music Educators Association Conference in San Antonio, TX, and the 2024 Maryland Music Educators Association Conference in Baltimore, MD. These conferences provided invaluable opportunities for networking, learning, and showcasing the impactful work of our alumni and our chapters. As we look ahead, we’re actively exploring other state conferences to attend and welcome your suggestions and assistance. Currently, we’re considering attending conferences in Florida and Virginia, so please reach out with any recommendations or offers of support. A heartfelt thank you to all the Brothers who stopped by our booth at these conferences – your presence and engagement were truly appreciated, and we look forward to seeing you all again next year!

In addition to our conference attendance, we’re excited to share that Kappa Kappa Psi was represented in this year’s NFL Super Bowl by the Eta Eta Chapter and Jackson State University’s Sonic Boom of the South. It was an electrifying moment that left us all in awe, as we witnessed their remarkable display of musicality, energy, and pride. Congratulations to the entire program for this unforgettable and unique achievement – your performance truly captured the spirit of Kappa Kappa Psi and showcased the power of music to unite and inspire. AEA!

Highlight #3: Share Your Kappa Kappa Psi Journey Story

Over the years, the National Committee on Communications has been dedicated to showcasing both current and historical members and moments in honor of Women’s History Month. While we aim to elevate these invaluable narratives, we also understand the importance of providing platforms for Brothers to share their own stories in their own voices. In line with the biennium’s theme of The Kappa Kappa Psi Journey, we extend an invitation to Brothers to share their fraternal journey story and their experiences as female-identifying Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi. We recognize the power of these personal accounts in connecting us to our values and seeing how they manifest in everyday actions. Here are some prompts to help you get started:

  • What is your KKPsi Journey? How did you get started in KKPsi?
  • Why is KKPsi special to you? Was there a special moment that sticks out to you?
  • Why are you still involved? How does it align with your KKWhy?
  • What would you tell someone questioning their KKPsi Journey (Active or Alumni) or unsure that they should join KKPsi? What words of advice or affirmation can you share?

Submit Your Story to be Highlighted

We encourage Brothers to share their Kappa Kappa Psi Journey stories with us in various formats, whether written, visual (such as images), or through video or audio clips. These submissions can be made using the link above. Questions or concerns can be emailed to the National Committee on Communications at communications@kkpsi.org

Highlight #4: Spring Informational Mailer

I’m excited to share details about our 2024 Spring Informational Mailer, a valuable resource designed to support our chapters as they embark on the new semester. Similar to the Fall Mailer that we send out each year, we recognized the need for continued guidance and updates for our chapters after the holiday break. To address this, an email with this resource was sent to all our members on January 24th.

From the Desk of the National President: February 2024 Updates

Brothers –

Our journey together continues as we turn the page on January and set our sights on the month of February. After an eventful start to the new year and a productive Winter Council Meeting, I am excited to bring you insights into the strides we made back in January and what you can expect from us this month.

As we step into February, it’s important to recognize the significance of the time that we are in. This month marks Black History Month, serving as an important reminder for us to delve into our complete history, recognizing that understanding our past is key to shaping our future. This month, as we honor Black History Month within the framework of our fraternity, let’s pay homage to the profound history, legacy, and influence of our Black Brothers throughout our 104-year journey. Thanks to the leadership and contributions of numerous Black Brothers, sponsors, and directors, our fraternity stands stronger and more vibrant today. In addition, it’s crucial to acknowledge that the music and band community we cherish owes its existence not only to the well-known icons who we celebrate but also to the countless Black and African American artists, music educators, and community members who have spread the joy of music across generations.

In recognition of this significant celebration of our shared experiences and diversity, the National Council designates February as our Month of Leadership. As one of the fundamental pillars of Kappa Kappa Psi, we have intentionally set aside this time for all Brothers to continue their “Leadership Journey” of (un)learning, (re)discovery, and growth. Reflecting on the journey of Kappa Kappa Psi and the profound impact of numerous Black Brothers on our fraternity, such as L. Allen Pyke, Marshall M. Penn, Dr. Lemuel Berry, Jr., Dr. Melvin Miles, Derrick Mills, Danny George, Dr. Nicholas Bratcher, and countless others, I am inspired to carry forward their fraternal legacy by empowering our members to become better leaders and strengthening our service to college and university bands.

In the spirit of leadership and celebration of Black History Month, I encourage each and every one of you to fully engage with our updates and programming this month. Through active participation and thoughtful consideration of the opportunities presented to us, we have the opportunity to amplify our collective impact as leaders and fortify the bonds of brotherhood and service that bind us together.

Update #2: Month of Leadership Engagement Opportunities

Since its inception in 2019, The Founders’ Circle has remained one of the Fraternity’s best-kept secrets! While attendees of district or national conventions in recent years may have caught wind of its purpose, for the majority of our members, it remains just another name and logo. As someone deeply passionate about this program, I am committed to reintroducing its value as a leadership development initiative to our students. Leadership stands as a cornerstone of our organization, defining the essence of what we bring to our programs and communities. However, leadership isn’t innate; it’s a skill we must cultivate, practice, and refine as we delve deeper into our understanding of ourselves and each other.

To mark the beginning of our Month of Leadership, we’re thrilled to announce a series of virtual panel discussions and workshops scheduled throughout February. Stay tuned for further details, but for now, here’s a glimpse of what’s in store:

  • Panel Discussion on The Founders’ Circle (Wednesday, February 7, 2024)
  • Founders’ Circle Discussion with Molly Kuchan (Thursday, February 15, 2024)
  • Founders’ Circle Discussion with Dr. Rorrer (Tuesday, February 20, 2024)
  • Founders’ Circle Discussion with Jessica Lee (Wednesday, February 28, 2024)

To ensure accessibility, these sessions will be streamed live on our Facebook page and subsequently shared on our LinkedIn and Instagram accounts for those who may have missed them. Additionally, I’m pleased to announce that Immediate Past President Jessica Lee has been appointed as the Chair, with Molly Kuchan serving as the Vice Chair of the task force dedicated to relaunching The Founders’ Circle. Their expertise and dedication will undoubtedly steer us toward success in this endeavor. Should you have any inquiries about the program or wish to learn more, please don’t hesitate to reach out to founderscircle@kkpsi.org. Your engagement and support are integral to the success of this initiative. Let’s embark on this journey of leadership together!

In addition to our participation at TMEA, we are eagerly expanding our reach to other state Music Educators Association conferences. We’re excited to announce our official attendance at the upcoming Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) Conference in Baltimore, MD, scheduled for February 23-25. Representing Kappa Kappa Psi at this event will be Dr. Lake and me. Furthermore, we are actively exploring opportunities to connect with directors, students, and alumni in our Western District. To this end, I will be attending the 2024 College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) Western/Northwestern Divisional Conference from March 27 to 30, 2024, hosted at the Las Vegas Academy of the Arts.

Your input is invaluable to us. If you know of events or conferences where Kappa Kappa Psi’s presence would be beneficial to promote our work and explore expansion opportunities, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at president@kkpsi.org. Your suggestions and insights play a crucial role in shaping our fraternity’s engagement and outreach efforts. From the Desk of the National President: January 2024 Updates

Brothers –

As we step boldly into the start of 2024, I extend warm New Year wishes to each of you on behalf of the National Council and Leadership Team. The journey of this biennium has been akin to a spirited march, with its share of highs and lows, yet made all the more remarkable by the unwavering support of a resilient and engaged team. It’s easy to become overly fixated on the successes and failures, when the focus should be on the broader journey, emphasizing progress and growth. This is a path where preparation is key, but acknowledging the unpredictability and lack of control remains equally vital. As I reflect on our first quarter together, I am reminded of our fraternity’s 104-year journey and how the themes of purpose, persistence, and perseverance are as relevant today as they were throughout our organization’s history.

In the spirit of shared reflection, I am excited to share updates and highlights that pave the way for an inspiring 2024. While I understand the constraints of time, these monthly statements are crafted with the sole purpose of keeping you informed. The engagement, as always, is yours to embrace.

Update #1: “Friend & Advocate” Initiative

To qualify for this program, membership in the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association is required. For any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Dr. Nicholas Rorrer at nic@kkpsi.org.

Update #3: National Winter Council Meeting
Every January, our National Council gathers for our annual National Winter Council Meeting, where we discuss and decide on important matters that shape our fraternity. One key focus is reviewing the status of chapters based on their reports and dues/fees. If your chapter hasn’t completed these submissions, we kindly ask you to do so promptly. If you encounter any issues with OPUS or need assistance with your report/funds submission, please don’t hesitate to reach out to our HQ at kkytbs@kkytbs.org.

Our National Winter Council Meeting is scheduled to take place between January 11-14, 2024, with Dr. Rorrer and me conducting the final round of interviews for our Chapter Field Representative search just days before. As we’ll be deep in meetings, please excuse any delay in responses during this period. For urgent matters, feel free to reach out to HQ.

Update #4: Upcoming Virtual Workshops
As highlighted in my communication from September 2023, our national committees will be actively engaged in providing a series of impactful virtual workshops, tailored to enhance the journey of each Active member. These sessions are designed to equip our members with practical skills and knowledge that will foster success within Kappa Kappa Psi, in their academic pursuits, and their future endeavors.

Stay tuned for more details on specific dates, times, and registration instructions. These workshops are tailored to empower you with practical knowledge and skills, fostering both personal and collective growth within our fraternity. Your engagement in these sessions will undoubtedly contribute to the continued success of Kappa Kappa Psi.

DECEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

Highlight #1: Midwest Clinic
We were thrilled to return to Chicago for the 2023 Midwest Clinic, and delighted to share a booth with Tau Beta Sigma. Despite the absence of some affiliate organizations at the conference, we valued the opportunity to showcase our joint presence and programs alongside Tau Beta Sigma. A heartfelt thank you to Dr. William Lake, KKPsi VP for Professional Relations, and Dr. LaToya Webb, TBSigma VP for Professional Relations, for orchestrating the engaging group activity, The Goosechase, which added an extra layer of excitement (and competitiveness) to the event.

Throughout the conference, we experienced the joy of reconnecting with numerous alumni members, cherishing the chance to catch up and share memories. In a move towards financial responsibility, we made the decision not to host an alumni/director reception this year. While we understand that this news brought disappointment to many alumni and directors, we are eagerly exploring more cost-effective ways to foster a space for alumni to come together, celebrate, and strengthen the bonds of our fraternity. Please stay tuned for updates on the 2024 Midwest Clinic and other conferences.

Highlight #2: Congratulations to the Bands of the Year
The first annual Historically Black College and University Band of the Year national championship, held on December 15, 2023, at Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia, showcased the incredible talents of Division I and Division II HBCU bands. This inaugural event not only crowns season-long champions but also elevates the significance of halftime performances, making every show a vital part of the college football experience.

We extend heartfelt congratulations to the winners of the 2023 Band of the Year, the Blue & Gold Marching Machine (North Carolina A&T), and the ROAR Marching Band (Florida Memorial)! The dedication and artistry displayed by both of these programs reflect the impact and prowess of HBCU band programs across the country. We commend these programs for their exceptional musicality, showmanship, and overall brilliance. We take immense pride in having chapters at both institutions, and their achievements underscore the dedication and excellence that our fraternity represents. Bravi tutti!

Highlight #3: AEA Scholarship Recipients
In our unwavering commitment to “Striving for the Highest,” we recognize that excellence extends beyond the realm of service to others; it is also deeply rooted in our members’ success in the classroom and their academic achievement. We take immense pride in congratulating our outstanding AEA Scholarship Recipients who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to their academic pursuits.

Distinguished Scholars

  • Jessica Alcorn
  • Megan Ledgerwood
  • Cade Skuse
  • Ashley Swanson

Honored Scholar

  • Christopher Allen

Their achievements stand as a testament to the multifaceted nature of our commitment to excellence, encompassing both service to others and personal academic growth. As they continue to inspire with their accomplishments, we celebrate their academic prowess and look forward to witnessing the positive impact they will undoubtedly make on the world. Congratulations to these bright minds, and may their success serve as a beacon for others to follow in their pursuit of excellence!

In the rhythm of leadership, service, and action, it’s easy to overlook the importance of intentional reflection. Like a compass pointing us forward, we must carry the lessons of yesterday as we march into the future. Our tools and knowledge may guide us, but the wisdom gleaned from our experiences is equally crucial. I am excited about the journey ahead and the opportunities for growth and excellence that await us in 2024!

Launching the Friend and Advocate Initiative – Call for the Alpha Cohort

Brothers,

It is with great pleasure that we announce the launch of the “Friend and Advocate Initiative.” This program is born out of the need to provide more individualized support for our chapters, be it our longstanding chapters, our new petitioning groups, or our chapters undergoing the “ReCharge” process. The goal of this initiative is to train Alumni members of the Fraternity to be up-to-date with the current practices of the Fraternity, such as the Road to Wisdom or our Chapter Operations (CHOPS) resources. Ultimately, we want to train and enable our Alumni members to support our chapters.

This desire and need brings us to today, where we are inviting our Alumni members to apply to be part of the ‘Alpha Cohort’ of the Friend and Advocate Initiative. Members of this cohort will be selected to be Petitioning and ReCharge Group advisor moving forward. In fact, the lessons of the cohort are designed to reflect the material that will be taught to members of petitioning and recharge groups. This includes:

  • Lesson 1. Our Service – A review of our policies, our work, discussions on designing successful service projects, and chapter operations resources for Chapter Service officers
  • Lesson 2. Our Leadership – An Introduction to the Founders Circle, discussions on how to run Chapter meetings, and chapter operations resources for Chapter Presidents
  • Lesson 3. Our Musicianship – An Introduction to the NIB, discussions on how to design fundraisers, and chapter operations resources for Chapter Treasurers
  • Lesson 4. Our Brotherhood – An Introduction to the Strive for Five Initiative, discussions on successful recruitment strategies, and chapter operations resources for Chapter Vice Presidents of Membership
  • Lesson 5. Our Journey – An Introduction to the Alumni Association, discussions on the inner circle, and the current biennium plan

Additionally, all lessons will also cover the related Road to Wisdom lessons. As this is the ‘Alpha Cohort,’ we fully expect that we will develop and refine this program throughout this process. The expected time commitment for this cohort is 2-3 hours a week. We also expect to host multiple cohorts throughout this biennium and next. If you are interested in applying, you can do so here:

Friend and Advocate Initiative Application Form

We are hoping that this initial cohort will have 20-30 members. The application will be open till January 10th, 2023 and the cohort training will begin mid-February. To be eligible for this program, you must be a current member of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association.

If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please contact Dr. Nic Rorrer (nic@kkpsi.org). We hope that many of you will be part of this or future cohorts.
